Research Applications Specialist Senior
Shelly Johnson, M.S., is a research application specialist for Advanced Research Computing (ARC), a division of Information and Technology Services (ITS). She builds and installs open-source and commercial software on the University of Michigan’s high-performance computing (HPC) clusters, including Great Lakes, Lighthouse, and Armis2. Additionally, she provides software support to users of the HPC clusters.
She also serves as the University of Michigan facilitator for the National Science Foundation (NSF) Advanced Cyberinfrastructure Coordination Ecosystem: Services & Support (ACCESS; formerly known as XSEDE). As a facilitator, Shelly helps users to evaluate the computational needs of their research projects, assist the user in determining the appropriate computational resource based on those needs, and quickly get start-up allocations to begin using ACCESS resources.
Before joining ARC, Johnson was an academic computing consultant for the sciences at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. She was also a research seismologist for Weston Geophysical Corporation in Lexington, Mass.
Johnson earned her masters degree in geoscience with a concentration in geophysics and seismology from Stony Brook University in Stony Brook, N.Y., and a bachelor of science in geology from Boston College in Chestnut Hill, Mass.
She enjoys traveling, reading, and playing with her dog, Spencer.
