Connecting to the tunnel

The Chicken of the VNC (CotVNC) client is very straightforward. Once the application starts, it will open a Connect dialog box.

In the Host box, you will typically put either localhost or 127.0.0.1 as the host name. Both refer to the computer from which CotVNC is being run. In the Display box, you will typically put the Desktop number, in the examples here 99, not the port number, which has here been 5999. We have seen some odd instances where one will be accepted and not the other. Try the Desktop number first, and if it fails, double-check your VNC password (perhaps even reset it with vncpasswd on a login node), and if it still fails, try the port number.

Finally, enter your VNC password in the password box and click the Connect button.

When the connection is successful, you will have a screen that looks like this:
