Michielssen is Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science in the College of Engineering, and a faculty member in the Radiation Laboratory at EECS. He has been with the university since 2005.
As AVP, Michielssen will work with the campus research community to ensure that U-M’s advanced research computing infrastructure meets the complex and evolving needs of University researchers in a wide range of disciplines. He will oversee Advanced Research Computing at U-M (ARC), which provides high-performance computing services; support for connecting to advanced computing resources; and workshops, speakers and conferences to enrich the advanced computing research community.

Prof. Michielssen’s research interests include all aspects of theoretical and applied computational electromagnetics, as well as development of fast frequency and time-domain integral equation-based techniques for analyzing electromagnetic phenomena. He is also engaged in the development of robust optimizers for the synthesis of electromagnetic/optical devices.
He is a magna cum laude graduate of Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in Belgium with B.S. and M.S. degrees in Electrical Engineering, and holds a PhD in Electrical Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign (UIUC). Prof. Michielssen came to U-M from UIUC in 2005, having held a variety of positions there including associate director of the Center for Computational Electromagnetics.
He has authored or co-authored nearly 180 journal articles, 11 book chapters, five books, and more than 300 conference papers; edited numerous books; and served as editor for several journals including currently as editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Numerical Modeling: Electronic Networks, Devices and Fields.
Prof. Michielssen will succeed Prof. Kenneth G. Powell, Arthur F. Thurnau Professor of Aerospace Engineering in the College of Engineering, who has been interim AVP for advanced research computing since September 2012.
